As the fall comes to an end, it is time to begin focusing on Spring Travel Baseball. As in past years, we will be selecting the spring youth travel teams in November so the teams can practice together over the winter in anticipation of the spring season. For those of you unfamiliar with Westport Spring Youth Travel Baseball, a description is attached (and below). All youth travel teams end their seasons in the middle of June so players can participate in the Little League district tournaments.
Key points to note about the spring include:
1. Any player playing youth travel baseball must also play Little League baseball. Schedules will be coordinated so that there is a minimum of conflict between Little League and travel ball.
2. Travel baseball is a full commitment and players must attend all games and practices unless an absence is cleared with the head coach. There may be games and practices over April break so if you are planning on being away over the April break, please let the coach know at the time of the tryouts.
3. Each player making the team will be asked to pay a $500 non-refundable deposit when they accept the position. The balance of the fee is due prior to the start of the season.
4. Costs for participation in the winter programs is not included in the spring team fees. An additional charge will be made per winter program that your child participates in.
A meeting regarding the spring travel baseball will be held on Tuesday, November 5 at 7 pm in room 186 at Staples High School. Room 186 is across from the Staples Fieldhouse. At that time Bob Smoler will answer questions about the program and address any issues that may have cropped up in prior seasons.
Tryouts for the 9U, 10U and 12U Spring Travel teams will be held on Thursday, November 7 at the Staples Fieldhouse. Tryouts for the 9 and 10 year old groups will start at 5:30 pm and will conclude at 7:30 pm. Tryouts for the 12 year old groups will start at 7:00 pm and will conclude at 9:00 pm.
Tryouts for the 11U Spring Travel team will be held on Sunday, November 17 at the Staples Fieldhouse from 10 am to 12 noon.
All the best,
Description: Westport Spring Youth Travel Baseball
Travel Baseball: Westport’s youth travel baseball programs are for players that are looking for a competitive baseball experience. The teams play other town’s travel teams and AAU teams located throughout the State of CT and elsewhere including one or more tournaments. At least half the games will be played in Westport and away games could be up to 1.5 to 2 hours away. All teams are coached by professional coaches with significant playing and coaching experience. Coach bios will be placed on the Youth Travel web-site shortly. Players can expect to either have a game or practice 4 days per week, depending on their game schedule. If a baseball activity is scheduled for a day and there is rain or a game is canceled for any reason there will still be baseball activities that take place that day either indoors or outside. Players are required to attend all games and practices. Any absences must be cleared with the head coach. Player rosters will be selected via tryout.
